Excellent response to awards

8 October 2009
Nominations for the Tasman Nelson Environment Awards 2009 are up significantly on last year. 86 entries have been received up from 36 last year. Coordinator Rob Francis says he believes the high level of interest this year reflects the fact that Nelson City joined Tasman District Council in running the Awards this year, and an increasing awareness of the importance of working towards and supporting good environmental practice in Tasman and Nelson.

The awards are an annual celebration of the efforts and achievements of people in the region towards improving and sustaining their environment.

The nine categories for this year’s awards recognise achievement in the rural and commercial sectors, schools, individuals and families, community and neighbourhood groups as well as heritage (cultural and structural) and new categories for urban design and best use of renewable energy.

Over the next few weeks judging panels comprising staff and Councillors from both Councils and local experts will assess each of the nominations, including site visits if appropriate, before choosing the category winners and the overall winner.

There are prizes of $1000 for each of the urban design, best use of renewable energy, schools, rural, community/neighbourhood groups and individuals/families. The winner of the commercial section receives a $1000 radio advertising package and the two heritage sections receive $500 each.

“We thank everyone who has taken the time to nominate someone or put themselves forward. The entries cover a wide spectrum of projects and initiatives. The Awards are a positive and tangible way to recognise our environmental leaders and to move our region toward sustainability,” Rob says.

The Tasman Nelson Environmental Awards presentation ceremony will be at the Woollaston Estates on Friday 20 November 2009.

Golden Bay to be put through its paces

23 July 2009

Golden Bay’s new Civil Defence Community Response Plan will be put to the test next week with Exercise Activate.

Golden Bay’s civil defence arrangements have been overhauled in the last twelve months. The new Community Response Plan was completed in 2008 and this is the first Exercise under the new plan. Exercise Activate will focus on the set up of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and getting staff familiar with basic EOC procedures. The inter-agency Exercise, including police, fire and ambulance, will also test equipment, including the generator and radios.

The exercise will run from 10am till 3pm on Tuesday 28 July out of the Tasman District Council Service Centre in Takaka, led by local Civil Defence Local Controller, Roger Broadhurst.

Nelson based Emergency Management Manager, Jim Burrows, says flooding is the most common hazard and likely emergency in the Bay, but civil defence in Golden Bay is also prepared to respond to other emergencies such as earthquake or slips.

As part of Exercise Activate, the location of Welfare Centre during flooding situations will be discussed and decided. Presently a number of facilities have been designated as possible evacuation points but experience from recent floods has led to a review.

“It’s always best to have a plan before it’s needed” Local Civil Defence Controller Roger Broadhurst says. “The earthquake in Southland just a few days ago reminds us that we need to constantly review our readiness.”
